One of Montalcino’s most significant and biggest family-run estate is Il Poggione. Founded in 1800 by Franceschi family, the 125 hectare land of grape vines and 70 hectares of olive trees has been a popular wine tasting venue for tourists and locals alike. Their wines are aged in large French oak barrels which extend five meters below ground – no wonder they produce well-structured, best-tasting wines showing ripeness, complexity and fullness.Le Tenuta Il Poggione is only open for visits and tastings by appointment from Monday ’til Friday from 8am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5pm. Tasting cost depends on the wine type tasted and the size of the visiting group. It also has its own self-catering accommodation in the vineyards which they also call Agriturismo Il Poggione.
