Did you know that throughout the region of Tuscany there are more than 500 museums?! From the Etruscans to the Middle Ages and then into the Renaissance period, the area boasts many museums and galleries to share its wonderful culture with you. The majority are located in Florence itself but there are definitely worthwhile museums to visit in the smaller cities and towns of the area.
During the Renaissance, the Medici Family encouraged the arts and culture and some of Italy’s greatest artists like Michelangelo, Macchiavelli, Botticelli and of course Da Vinci were born and well supported. This was all until the fundamentalist monk ‘Savonarola’ tried to destroy all of the beauty that had been created by preaching to the people that any ‘vice’ or ‘vanity’ would be seen as ‘unholy’ on judgement day. Luckily some of the artworks by these greats were saved by the Medici supporters, hidden in countryside villas and churches and avoided the ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ which took place in the Piazza della Signoria.
There are museums for all members of the family and some need to be booked ahead in summer to ensure entry. Enjoy the Museums Directory and if we have missed something that you feel should be included please write to us on firstname.lastname@example.org
